General Hendrik Jacobus Schoeman. Born 11 July 1840, died 26 May 1901. General Hendrik Johannes Schoeman (1840-1901). He surrendered on 5 June 1900 to General French, two days after the fall of Pretoria. He was arrested July 1900 by Commandant PF Coetsee while sitting at his home. He was seen as a 'hands-upper'. Later he and some friends were blown to smithereens when a lyddite shell, which he had brought back from Colesberg and which graced his parlour, exploded when it was used as an ashtray - an occurrence which pious Boerssaw as the 'finger of God on a traitor' Military History Journal - Vol 3, No 1,The Hands-Uppers, by V.E.
