1 Adriaan farmed on the farm Paapkuilsfontein in the Cathcart district. He was a good speaker, sang well and full of fun ( "grapmaker") and compassion and had many friends. According to his children (see "Odendaal Gedenkalbum") he was religious, gentle (saggeaard) and a family man and always had some sweets in his waist-coat pocket. He could however keep discipline. One of his weaknesses was that he could not say "no". This led to his financial ruin when he had to pay up for the debts of his financially incapable son-in-law on whose behalf he had stood surety. Odendaal, Adriaan Izak (I3409)

Wikipedia gives the following information on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Preller

Gustav Schoeman Preller (4 October 1875 in Klein Schoemansdal, Klipdrift, Pretoria – 7 October 1943 in Pelindaba) is known as a journalist, historian, writer and literary critic. He fought for the recognition of Afrikaans. Preller helped the Afrikaner to awake to the importance of the history of South Africa. He made great contributions to the writing of South African history, through his research and the literature. He also contributed greatly to making South Africans aware of the legacy of the Voortrekkers and also played an early part in planning the Voortrekker Monument.

Gustav was the son of Comdt. Robert Logie Preller and Stefina Schoeman (daughter of the Voortrekker Gen. Stephanus Schoeman). His parents farmed near Standerton where he attended school for only 3 years. Later he worked in Pretoria as a shop-assistant, an articled clerk and a civil servant, studying diligently when he found the time. When the Boer War started, he was working as a clerk for the Department of Mines and was married to Johanna, the granddaughter of M. W. Pretorius (i.e. 'Swart Martiens', the cousin of M. W. Pretorius) and Deborah Retief.

The South African Academy of Science and Art (Afrikaans: Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns) gives out annually the Gustav Preller Award that has been awarded since 1909.

Blykbaar was haar name 'n goed bewaarde geheim!

Volgens my notas het ouma Sannie wel 3 broers gehad - die een is dood as 2 jarige kind nadat 'n ossewa oor hom gery het. Sy naam was Jannie. Ta Maja was met oom Job Wagner getroud - so oom Job was nie ouma Sannie se eie broer nie - dis nou volgens my notas. Die oom Job en ta Maja het 4 seuns gehad (Job, Koos, pastoor Hendrik en Nesar. Die pastoor is dood in karongeluk tydens huisbesoek en Nesar is by sy werk doodgeskiet).

Hendrik, the youngest son of the marriage was born in Swellendam on 7th December 1826 where his father had been “practicing” most of his life. He was a short, thick-set and strong man with blue eyes that blazed when he succumbed to his frequent fits of temper. Early in his life he became apprenticed to a blacksmith. About ten years after the battle of Blood River he arrived in the then recently established town of Pietermaritzburg where he met his future bride Susannah Magretha Maritz, an offspring of two great Voortrekker families.(1) He was doing work for her father, Francois Ignatius Maritz, a prosperous wagonmaker. On the 21st June 1847 they were joined in matrimony by the honourable Döhne in the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in Pietermaritzburg. The following is an extract from their marriage certificate:

“Hendrik Muller, jongeman van 20 jaar wagenmaker van beroep” and

“Susannah Magretha Maritz, ‘n jongedogter van 17 jaar” were married “na

huwelyksgeboden met toestemming van der ouders”(2)

The newlyweds made their home in Berg Street Pietermaritzburg(3) where ten of their thirteen children were born.(4) Hendrik continued with his work as blacksmith and wagonmaker and by the year 1866 had accumulated “considerable wealth.”(5) A year later he stood surety for a friend(6) who went bankrupt with the result that Hendrik lost all the savings he had so diligently accumulated. Shortly after this disastrous financial setback Hendrik moved his family to the farm “Uitzoek” in the district of Harrismith. Later he moved into the town of Harrismith where he toiled once more as a blacksmith.(7) until his death in 1907 (or thereabouts).(8)

(1)She was the daughter of Dina Maria Uys (who was in turn the daughter of Jacobus Johannes

Uys, the Voortekker leader) and Francois Ignatius Maritz (The son of Salamon Maritz, who was the brother of Gerrit Maritz, another great Voortrekker leader). The young Susannah Magretha was present at the battle of Blood River.

(2)Archives, Pietermaritzburg.

(3)See Corporation notice in the supplement to the Natal Witness and Agricultural and Commercial

Advertiser dated 15th October 1858.

(4)The last three children were born in Harrismith.

(5)According to many of the compiler’s informants.

(6)Some members of the family are of the opinion that he stood surety for one of his cousins. The

compiler has not been able to elicit accurate information about what actually happened.

(7)See “General Directory for South Africa” dated 1888 and 1890 under the heading “Farriers and

Blacksmiths, Harrismith”

(8)One of the most striking features to emerge from this genealogy is the tendency toward

longevity as far as the menfolk of the Muller clan are concerned and the demise at an early

age of the womenfolk

37 According to research done by the writer (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atlantis/4364/f5.htm), Nicolaas wife's grandmother was called Latea van die Kaap. This supports his daughter-in-law (writer's grandmother, who mentioned to the writer) who was told that the Bruyns family had a trace of mix blood. There must have been some miscegenation back earlier. Latea was a very pretty girl since in a rhyme it refers to this. "Dan volgt Latea nimmer schuins De Deelgenoot van Christian Bruins" Later Latea was baptised in Stellenbosch as an adult in 1843 and she took on the name Elizabeth Gertyda Markunes. 40 Around 1621 Simon Toenis van der Piet of Delft, bought up the Tile factory on the Schritsen ( corner of Raamstraat and Schritsen) in Harlingen, Friesland, originally established by Steffen Gunter the elder in 1598.

Simon's wife, Maritgen Jans dr. van der Laan signed a contract in 1637 with the tilemaker Adriaen Cornelis van Leeuwen from Delft, which required him to move as speedily as possible to Harlingen where he was to spend a year painting saucers and tiles for Van der Piet. The contract names prices as

follows:

'fijne schutters', 36 stuyvers per 100 stuks;

'slechte mannekes', 24 stuyvers per 100 stuks;

'slechte stien' (eenvoudige tegels), 16 stuyvers per 100 stuks;

'scheepjes of ruiters te paard', 2 gld. en 10 stuyvers per 100 stuks.

Van der Piet's pottery was not, however, a large concern. According to an inventory of 1639 there were 2000 unbaked tiles. It seems likely that, at that time, they were already usring red, yellow, green and deep yellow colouring for their tiles, the traditional Harlinger colours.

In 1681 the factory was take over by Pytter Pytterse Grauda and Jan Folekerts Grauda for 2200 gulden.
